"Peak amps" has no governing standard
"Peak amps" is the number on nearly every jump-starter box, and it has no independent test standard behind it. No body defines the temperature, the load, or the duration — manufacturers set their own test conditions, or disclose none. SAE J537 and Cold Cranking Amps (CCA)
Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) is defined by SAE J537: the amps a 12V battery can sustain for 30 seconds at 0°F (−18°C) without its terminal voltage dropping below 7.2V. It is the one cranking-related figure in this category with a real, citable engineering standard — and almost no portable jump starter discloses it. Cranking Amps (CA) and Marine Cranking Amps (MCA)
CA and MCA use the same 30-second, 7.2V-floor test as CCA, but at a milder 32°F (0°C) instead of 0°F — so CA and MCA numbers read about 20–25% higher than CCA for the identical cell. A handful of jump starters (Weego, Schumacher) disclose a CA-style figure alongside their peak-amp headline; most disclose neither.
Non-disclosure is the pattern, not the exception
Across the current jump-starter lineup in our Cranking Amp Reality Index, disclosed cranking-amps figures are rare — most listings market only the undefined peak-amp number. We record this as "not disclosed," a clean, uniform token, rather than guessing. The pattern itself is a finding.
The plausibility flag is a derived estimate, not a test result
Our plausibility flag compares a unit's advertised peak-amp claim to its disclosed battery capacity, using a stated assumption (peak amps ÷ rated amp-hours = an implied momentary C-rate). It does not prove any specific product's claim is false — it flags when an advertised figure is consistent only with an extremely brief instantaneous pulse, not a sustained cranking load. Battery chemistry: lithium-ion, LiFePO4, and supercapacitors
Most jump starters use lithium-ion or LiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate) cells; a small number use supercapacitors instead, which store charge differently, tolerate extreme temperatures better, but cannot sustain output the way a battery can and are not rated in mAh/Wh. Engine-size guidance is a manufacturer recommendation
Displacement guidance ("up to 8.0L gas / 6.0L diesel") is a manufacturer recommendation, not an independently verified rating. Diesel engines need sustained current for longer glow-plug and compression cycles, which is one more reason a disclosed CCA figure matters more than a peak-amp headline for diesel owners. Jump-starting involves real polarity and procedure risk. Always follow your jump starter's manual and your vehicle owner's manual for the correct clamp order and sequence — this site is a specifications and standards reference, not a safety manual or a substitute for those instructions.
